Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

May 31, 2002 - The Chamber of Secrets has been opened! Entertainment Weekly has been given a first look at the new Harry Potter film, courtesy of their corporate brethren over at Warner Bros. The mag will run a special Chamber of Secrets preview in their June 7th issue, but you can check out ten cool pictures and some interesting bits from the story online now.

As EW puts it, the second film in the Potter saga lacks the "new-world wonder" of Sorcerer's Stone, the "dark twists" of Azkaban, and the "epic grandeur" of Goblet of Fire''). It is indeed much more of a light-hearted and adventurous romp. Chris Columbus tells EW, "The first one was about introduction and discovery. This time, we jump right into the story. Chamber of Secrets has a lot more humor and 10 times as much action." These qualities could be a huge bonus for Chamber since the major problems many had with the first film were often related to introductory exposition or Harry just standing around in awe of his surroundings. Columbus continues, "Harry is more actively heroic in the sequel." He also says that he tried to make Chamber of Secrets a bit spookier than the previous film because he felt the fans might "want a little more edge" this time around.

The mag also says that while director Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves aren't changing anything crucial to the story, they've made minor to changes to a few scenes. The encounter with the giant spiders and the climax inside the Chamber of Secrets have been "tweaked" to give the audience a few more thrills.

Among the ten new photos you'll find a first look at Dobby the house elf who appears in the second tale. He's actually a lot like I pictured him – cool. They should get Jim Dale, the guy who reads the U.S. versions of the Potter audio books to provide his voice. When asked if the all-CG character would be reminiscent of a certain computer-generated Star Wars character (Who could deysa be talkin' about?), Columbus joked, "I don't even want to go there. They are nothing alike."

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
by J. K. Rowling
first printing: fall 2002?
Current unsubstantiated rumor, from an email posted online:

"I think I may have mentioned to you that my company prints all the HP books in the UK. Well we've been told to reserve all of april and may for an advance order of 2 million copies of HP5...Apparently she is unhappy with two chapters (4 and 5?), and is rewriting them and planning for an end of school term (in the UK) release."

Best guess as to when the fifth book will come out is fall 2002. Is that for sure? Nope. On April 21, 2002, a spokeswoman for Bloomsbury is quoted in Entertainment Weekly as saying: ''She's still writing it. Until she delivers the manuscript, we won't announce a publication date. We're hoping it will be this autumn. It probably will be later in the fall.''

Information about the book:

This is the title that JKR gave for the fifth book in the series. She revealed this during the taping of the Today Show.
This book will be shorter than the last one, according to Rowling.
Most fans assume that the title refers to a goups who will band together to fight Voldemort, possibly the "Old Crowd" Dumbledore sent Sirius to call together at the end of Goblet of Fire.
The phoenix in this title is very likely a reference to Fawkes, Dumbledore's pet phoenix, whose tail feathers are imbedded in the wands of both Harry and Voldemort.
What's going to happen in book 5? Here's a nice list of quotes by JKR herself which give you some idea. The list has been circulating in various fan groups online; I'm not sure who to give credit to. If you know, please let me know:
What will happen in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix?

All original JKR quotes, with sources at the end:

"In book 5, we go into a whole new area, physically, an area you've never seen before, a magical world" (1)

"What's very important for me is when Dumbledore says that you have to choose between what is right and what is easy. This is the setup for the next three books. All of them are going to have to choose, because what is easy is often not right." (1)

"You'll be seeing Mrs. [Arabella] Figg in book five, and you'll find out all about her." (2)

Harry will see him [the real 'Mad-Eye' Moody] in book five. (2)

Why do some wizards/witches become ghosts and others don't? "You will find out much more about that in book five." (3)

There will be a female Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher. (3)

"You see Lupin in Book Five. Yes you see a lot of old characters in Book Five." (4)

Book five will be scary. Harry finds out a lot of things he hasn't stumbled across so far. (4)

"The Dursleys are in the next book, and there's stuff coming with them that people might not expect." (5)

"Ginny Weasley [little sister to Harry's best friend, Ron] will play more of a role in Book Five." (5)

"In book five [Harry] has to examine exactly what death means, in even closer ways." (6)
